When should status appear?
The IRS says refund status is generally available about 24 hours after electronically filing a current-year return, about three days after e-filing a prior-year return, or about four weeks after mailing a paper return. The IRS also says many e-filed refunds are issued in under 21 days, but returns requiring correction or review can take longer.
Common reasons for a delay
- Information on the return does not match IRS records.
- The return claims credits that require additional review.
- The IRS needs identity verification or more documents.
- Bank information is incomplete or incorrect.
- The return is amended, injured-spouse related, or filed on paper.
Refund reduced or different?
The IRS or Treasury may adjust a refund for tax debt or certain other debts. A notice should explain the change or identify the agency that received an offset. Compare the notice with your filed return before deciding whether to respond.
